A race weekend at Area 27, documented by three people, featuring an F1 world champion and a car that caught fire.

The story

The brief

Area 27 brought us in to cover a race weekend: a full field of production cars and race cars on the members-only circuit in Oliver, British Columbia. Three of us went up, myself with Vijay Kaila and Cameron Lee Wong, to shoot the racing and interview the drivers.

The weekend

We got Jacques Villeneuve, the Canadian F1 world champion, on camera. We got weather that turned the track into something far more cinematic than a clear day would have. And we got a car catching fire, one of the only times that has happened at Area 27.

None of that was on the schedule. Covering a live event means the plan is really a readiness posture: know the circuit, know where the light and the sightlines are, keep the crew mobile, and be able to turn on whatever the weekend decides to hand you.

The cut

We brought it all home and built a documentary-style brand spot from it, and I composed a custom score for the piece. It worked well enough that Area 27 brought us back for the Dodge spot.
